Impulse

I seem to be doing a lot of things on impulse recently. So when trying to save as much money as I can, this is not particularly a good tactic.

On one occasion I was not even aware that I had bought something! Entering the Kings College building at 9.50am on the Tuesday morning for my enrolment I suddenly wondered what it was that I was holding and found I had a cup of coffee in my right hand. I actually have no idea when I bought it and I have no idea where I bought it from, nor how much it cost, yet somewhere on my short walk from Charing Cross station to the Kings building on the Strand I had picked up a coffee from Café Nero. I really must ensure I put an end to that practice…

On the rest of times I have been able to justify the ‘one-off’ expense as a settling-in treat. The aforementioned performance of Liberty at the Globe Theatre was simply fantastic and definitely worth the expense, but was the kilo of kiwi fruits from the market in Lewisham? The fact that they were delicious and that I definitely had my allotted ‘five portions’ that day is irrelevant, I need to stop spending.

It was therefore not particularly wonderful that passing through Oxford on Wednesday night that me and my brother decided, on impulse, that we should see if we can get tickets to the ‘Allo ‘Allo stage-show that was opening at the New Theatre the following evening. It was a show that I was really keen to see and I had no idea that it was playing any venue nearby so we decided to have a look and managed to get reduced student tickets.

It was a really great show and as previous viewers of the show would expect contained plenty of sexual innuendo, as much as an underground train holds commuters in a weekday morning rush-hour. The cast, which boasted Vicki Michelle, the actress who played the waitress Yvette in the original TV series, as well as Jeffrey Holland of Hi-de-Hi fame, put on a brilliant show that was a laugh a minute and a real joy to watch.

Now I’m back in the capital, it is now service resumed. Packed lunches have been prepared and my MA course finally gets started on Wednesday (I hope) so hopefully that will keep me busy. Mind you, even that’s not cheap…
